The book of Philadelphia boxing champions is poised to add a chapter on August 1st as Stephen Fulton Jr. is set to jump in the ring for the vacant WBO junior featherweight belt.
Fulton (18-0 8KOs) will take on Angelo Leo (19-0 9KOs) for the belt which was vacated by Emanuel Navarrete as he moves up a weight class. After 5 title defenses, he’s moving onto featherweight, which is more comfortable for him. The WBO ranks Fulton as the #1 contender in the division and the Mayweather Promotions backed Leo is ranked #2 right behind him.
Fulton said of the fight upon its announcement
“I feel great. It’s well overdue. I’ve been deserving this chance after the road I took defeating all of the undefeated fighters that I have. I don’t underestimate him, but he doesn’t have what it takes to beat a fighter like me — especially mentally. He will be world champion one day, but now is not the time for him.”
In his career, Fulton has fought and beaten 8 opponents who were undefeated before meeting him in the ring. He also captured the IBO belt in 2019 and has wins over top-ranked contenders Joshua Greer and Adam Lopez.
Both Fulton and Leo, who is coming off a very impressive TKO win over Cesar Juarez in December, are bonafide contenders. A title win sets them up with possible unification bouts against the impressive champion Rey Vargas and the newest titleholder Murodjon Akhmadaliev. Plus former champ Daniel Roman (who had the best title fight of the year so far with Murodjon) is still lurking around looking to regain some gold.
The PBC on Showtime card is set to be the promotion’s return to boxing after a long layoff due to COVID-19. The undercard has not yet been announced. The fight will take place at the Mohegan Sun Resort and Casino in Connecticut without fans in attendance.
