This week the PGA Tour rolls into Memphis Tennessee for the WGC-Fed Ex St Jude Invitation. The top 8 players in the world rankings take to the course in this star-studded 78 player, no-cut field. Newly ranked World number 1 John Rahm is the betting favorite at 11-1. Here are my plans for this week’s event.
I am going to go against my normal thought process of staying away from the most expensive players on the card by centering my team around Rory McIlroy. He has a great track record at WGC events and with him struggling by his standards (only one top 12 finish since the restart), he may have lower ownership than some of the other top 8 like Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau.
We are then going to look at two other names that have had a hot run on tour since the restart. First, Collin Morikawa, who has a 1st and 2nd place finish in the five events he has played. He has shown that even though he is just 23 years old, he can hang with the big boys. The next guy I am picking is Viktor Hovland. The 22-year-old pro from Norway has played all six events since the restart, making all six cuts and finishing in the top 25 in five of those events (with a third-place finish mixed in there). These young guys really are making a name for themselves and have earned my confidence in taking them in this stacked event.
The final four spots are a little trickier than normal to pick. There are so many bigger, well-known names that are so much cheaper than normal because of the deep but small field. Phil Mickelson, Adam Hadwin, Chez Reavie, and Matt Kuchar are where I go. Mickelson has performed well at this event in the past. Hadwin is an underrated fantasy golf player, with a very solid 111.33 Fantasy Points Per Tournament (He is a steal at $13000). Reavie has made four straight cuts and scored a boatload of points. Kuchar is another vet at a cheap price and just rounding into form, making three straight cuts since the restart.
Last week was a disappointment at the 3M Open with my first zero cash weekend since the PGA restart. I hate losing, so took my time making these choices.
As always these picks are based on the values of http://www.fantasydraft.com and as always have fun, change a few players to not totally copy my lineup, and MAKE SOME MONEY!
