Stephen Fulton (18-0 8 KOs) will have to wait a little longer now to potentially join the ranks of Philadelphia boxing champions.
His title opportunity Saturday against Angelo Leo (19-0 9 KOs) was done in by Fulton’s positive test for COVID-19, forcing a change in the main event. Leo will now fight Tramaine Williams (19-0 6 KOs) for the vacant WBO junior featherweight title.
Williams steps up from the undercard to face Leo, so a battle of unbeaten fighters keeps the main event intact. Fulton expressed his frustration in a tweet announcing his positive test.
<blockquote class=”twitter-tweet”><p lang=”en” dir=”ltr”>Beyond Hurt !!! I won’t be fighting for the world title Saturday night due to me testing positive for COVID. I never got anything easy, just a set back for a crazy return, pray for me if you can.</p>— Stephen Fulton Jr (@coolboysteph) <a href=”https://twitter.com/coolboysteph/status/1288636245900394497?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw”>July 30, 2020</a></blockquote> <script async src=”https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js” charset=”utf-8″></script>
Originally a matchup of the top two contenders, Williams who is #6 in the division will face a short notice challenge against the #2 Leo. According to Boxingscene.com Fulton’s management has petitioned the WBO for Fulton to face the winner of the Leo-Williams matchup.
With any luck, Fulton will be fighting for a title by the years’ end.
