Gabe Rosado Gets His Fight With Jacobs

After a lot of trash talk, Instagram posts, tagging Eddie Hearn, and more, Philadelphia born fighter Gabriel Rosado has gotten his wish in the form of the main event bout against former middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs.

The campaign for this fight began back on December 20th, 2019  when Rosado and Jacobs were set to fight on the same card, and almost fought each other. The scheduled main event was Jacobs vs Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, with Rosado waiting to step in if the famously flakey and irresponsible Chavez Jr pulled out. He didn’t, despite missing weight over 4 pounds. Instead, they fought 5 confusing rounds, with Chavez Jr having some success, only to pull out due to an injury. He and his corner, which contained actor Mickey Rourke, rushed out of the arena under a hail of beer cans. It was a bounce-back win for Jacobs who had unsuccessfully challenged Canelo Alvarez for the WBA, WBC, and IBF middleweight titles.

After Phoneix, Arizona’s Talking Stick Arena emptied, Rosado (25-12-1 14 KOs), fought the walkout bout against Humberto Gutierrez Ochoa (33-9-2, 22 KOs), winning a 10 round unanimous decision. With both fighters having their top tier runs at middleweight over, it was time to jump up to super middleweight, and Rosado was eager to meet Jacobs (36-3-0 30 KOs) at 168.

Jacobs is a very good fighter, whose potential was likely never fully realized thanks to his battle with bone cancer which took 2 years from his career. The two-time titleholder did make his comeback though and has established an inspiring career. Rosado is a good fighter, who has always played to exciting a crowd and leaving it all in the ring. With likely no fans in attendance, it will be interesting to see if Rosado might fight more conservatively. He’ll also be a large underdog. If you’re judging the fight by boxing math, Jacobs has wins over their mutual opponents (Maciej Sulecki, Luis Arias, and Peter Quillin) and both have lost to Gennady Golovkin.

The fight is currently slated for November 27th with no location announced yet. It will be streamed on the DAZN platform in both the United States and help launch DAZN UK as well.
