Meet the Newest Philadelphia Eagle: Tyree Jackson

You may recognize the name. Watch a highlight reel and you’ll notice a massive human being under center. Standing 6 feet 7 inches and weighing in at 250 pounds, Tyree Jackson encompasses the term duel threat. Jackson played Quarterback at the University of Buffalo and finished with just under 7,000 career passing yards and 65 totals touchdowns in three seasons. Jackson then went undrafted and signed as a free agent signing of the Bills in 2019. After failing to make the 53 man roster, Jackson set his sights on next season… Spring to be exact. The DC Defenders of the XFL used Jackson as their backup QB in 2020. He sat behind former Ohio State alum Cardale Jones and played sparingly during the season. Jackson finished with just 46 passing yards and 28 rushing yards on the year.

After the XFL suspended operations in March of 2020 due to COVID-19, Jackson was left without a professional football gig. Fast forward to November of 2020. Jackson popped up on the NFL’s tryout wire for both the Colts and Seahawks. Interestingly enough, Jackson was not listed as a Quarterback. Instead, Tight End was slotted next to Jackson’s name on the wire.

Enter the Philadelphia Eagles. On December 9th, Philly brought in Jackson. Just as Indianapolis and Seattle had done previously, the Eagles tried out Jackson as a Tight End. He was signed to a reserve/futures contract on January 7th, 2021. This type of contract benefits young players and guarantees the team a chance to evaluate them in the offseason. Any player signed to a reserve/futures contract cannot be signed by another team and the player will be apart of offseason activities and training camp. At just 23 years old, this is the perfect opportunity for Jackson to get accustomed to the Tight End position.

Below is a great comparison of Tyree Jackson and Washington Football Team’s Tight End Logan Thomas. Thomas and Jackson has more in common than just “measurables”. Thomas played Quarterback in for Virginia Tech. After some rather unsuccessful years in the Quarterback room, Thomas converted to a Tight end to lengthen his NFL career. Thomas comes off the heels of his best season at the position with 72 catches for 670 yards and 6 touchdowns. Thomas is an example of a QB to TE switch, something Jackson is now looking to do successfully.

As we look at the current Eagles roster, Zach Ertz may be departing via trade this off-season. The Eagles have 8 Tight Ends on their roster if you include the newly signed Jackson. Jackson may very well end up sneaking onto the practice squad next season. If that is the case, the Eagles could end up with a diamond in the rough. The front office has had a ton of success with undrafted free agent signings, could they have another one in Tyree Jackson? I cannot wait to find out.
