Joel Embiid earns Eastern Conference Player of the Month honors

MVP candidate and 76ers big man Joel Embiid has been named the Eastern Conference Player of the month for games in December and January. It is the second time in Joel’s career that he earned the award, and he Jones Allen Iverson, Charles Barkley, Moses Malone, and Dr. J as the only 76ers player to win the award more than once.

Embiid scored in double figures in 13 of his 14 games, including two 40-plus point performances and a team-best 12 double-doubles. He’s the only player in the NBA with multiple 40-point, 10-rebound double-doubles. Embiid made 152 free throws during the season’s first month-plus, ranking second in the NBA while leading the league in free throws made (9.5) and attempted per game (11.3). He was the only player in the league to make 16 free throws in multiple games. Iverson and Malone are the only 76ers ever to make at least nine free throws per game for an entire season.

Embiid has led the first-place 76ers to a 14-2 record when he has played (15-6 overall) including a win over the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers when he led the team in scoring with 28 points. Joel who also won Eastern Conference Player the Week this season now adds Player of the Month to help make his case for MVP this season.
